Anxiety Therapist making legal threats

Here’s something interesting. An individual by the name of Charles Linden is promoting what he calls the Linden Method as “the cure for all anxiety disorders”. According to his website he makes no claim to be a mental health professional, but does make a number of claims for the Linden Method.

I have cured anxiety sufferers permanently and completely in under two hours.

Can I cure every sufferer in two hours? Yes, IF they do exactly as I state, their neurology will respond.

Can it fail? No, if anxiety is the condition and the subject is human, it cannot fail.

Does it always happen in two hours? No. It is all down to the person’s neurology. I don’t have total control over that.

Is there another way to recover from anxiety? No. The body and mind have one anxiety disorder recovery process.

That’s an impressive claim, if accurate.
An article on his website suggests that some people have been disputing his claim. According to Linden,
We currently have a small group of people headed by a ‘professional’ from psychology who have an issue with us curing anxiety… why? a) they can’t b) they can’t make money from recovery because they can’t produce it c) They want to charge patients repeatedly d) They can’t admit that what they do doesn’t work… there are so many reasons.

These people recruit others to harass us… they create false information and unleash their hounds on us.

What they don’t know, but will soon discover, is that every post, comment and word they have said has been logged and forwarded to our barristers… amounting to:

1. Over 400 highly defamatory accusations – they only needed to have posted one to have a case against them.
2. Over 900 harassing communications – over 200 times the necessary communications to have a case against them.
3. Cyber-stalking with 1200% more evidence than is necessary to have a case against them.
4. Breaches of the harassment act for cyber-bullying.

Linden also states he will be taking action against them.
The case is huge and will be executed in 4 parts by our barristers and solicitors in Manchester… a firm in the top three in the UK, specialising in civil litigation.

They have a choice but have, so far, chosen to ignore it.

1. Sign an agreement to prevent being sued.
2. Be sued for harassment, then defamation of character.

The second option will cost them at least £30,000 in legal costs. We have been assured by three barristers and six solicitors that our chance of success in each action is excellent and that damages paid for defamation will cover all losses and legal fees plus damages for distress over 12 years.

I’m not a party to this case, and have no inside knowledge of it. Therefore I’m in no position to comment on the merits of Linden’s claim. However, I did find this Advertising Standards Authority ruling about the Linden Centre, in which the complainants alleged 10 points of misleading advertising. All 10 allegations were upheld by the ASA.

  1. Thanks Phil.

I am intrigued by Charles Linden’s “The Descent of Decency” article. It puts me in mind of the online and written threats, psyops and hostility posted by Lindsey Talbott of Palace Gate Counselling Service when some of us raised the alarm about John Clapham’s abusive practice. Empty legal threats to put us in a cardboard box plus complaints to our professional body (all thrown out without merit of course). It was a “witch hunt” of course. We were reported to the police for harassment but the police quite rightly didn’t do anything about it and saw that we were trying to protect the public. These were the actions of panicked and guilty “professionals”. We were told that they had top lawyers “in the City of London” who said they had a good case. I guess you will be receiving a legal threat soon Phil, maybe me too for commenting. Perhaps, despite all the expert legal advice, Mr Linden isn’t aware of two of the defences against libel and defamation; the truth and protection of the public.

As a peer said to me whilst I was fighting against the two year tide of effluence that came my way when trying to protect others from abusive practice; cornered rats go for the jugular.

    • If he does decide to send me a lawyergram, I’ll be impressed to read the legal opinion that explains how I’ve libelled him by quoting his own website.

  2. This is an interesting read…. and Mr Linden’s website really is a startling one. Apart from making some really whackingly bold claims about his success (without, I notice, any evidence to back them up) – he goes on to give a list of other therapies that “CAN’T WORK and prevent true recovery” …. which includes CBT, any kind of talking therapy, mindfulness, and – wait a minute – pretty much everything except the Linden treatment. Funny, that!

    • Sorry Ian I tried to rate your comment with a thumbs up but my finger botched it. Please ignore the thumb down.

  3. I have seen the way Charles Linden treats anyone who dares to question his methods ! He uses his children to to make attacks on these people, he is rude, aggressive and down right nasty ! If you leave a comment on the Facebook page or twitter account questioning his methods it is immediately removed and you are blocked from commenting again ! The man is a cheat, liar and fraudster who has no compassion for anyone or anything apart from how much money he can rake in !!!

  4. So no therapies every in the whole entire works work, guess what, apart from his!! Not only that, all those other evidences therapies will mess you up, but his won’t.
And dare you challenge him, he will bully you down with threats, that may un turn induce anxiety, he’s the anxiety saviour NOT!!!!
Where is Oliver James in this, surely he should make a comment given he’s being quoted by Linden.

  5. So I have seen NO empirical research to support the effectiveness of the Linden Method in comparison to other methods of highly evidenced treatment. Nor do I know of any other method that totally slates and dismisses other methods in the way Linden does. The comments and behaviour seem very extreme, so much anger and hate for others. I wouldn’t buy a sandwich from this man, let alone treatment for a mental health condition.

Interestingly, users of the method have commented here:

Wouldn’t it be great if there was such an easy cure for anxiety, and if Linden had discovered one, it would have made the news. Wouldn’t he have won a Nobel prize, in fact? Anxiety is a very common, often complex, and debilitating problem.

The website has also referred to NICE CG113 I had no idea NICE had anything to say about linden. A quick look at NICE guidelines for treating anxiety, showed ZERO reference to the Linden method. Is the reference to CG113 a mistake on Linden’s part, or is he assuming that most people won’t actually look it up?!

  6. Thank you for highlighting this Phil and thank you to Amanda for subsequent thoughts, as to other posters. As Ian says, funny how every single therapy, apart from Charles’ is harmful and dangerous. Communicating lies to the public that psychotherapy is not effective, that mindfulness is dangerous is a disgrace. The man is a complete joke.

Kieran, you won’t find any research. Charles cobbled together a farce of a (I can’t bring myself to call it a ‘study’), whatever and Professor Paul Salkovskis, rightly pulled it apart/critiqued it. Here it is, titled ‘More utter and complete tripe masquerading as ‘research” on The Linden Method’ :

    https://psychonoclast.wordpress.com/2014/05/20/danish-tripe-a-defence-of-the-linden-method-research-trial/

Charles Linden has zero mental health qualifications. He tries to make out his team have ‘qualified psychologists’. One has a masters degree, she is not a qualified psychologist.

Let’s also think about the method. Now we all know Charles lies, the ASA have pulled him up about this e.g. ‘the method cannot fail’ (though if it does it’s conveniently ’cause someone didn’t do it right) ‘it can cure you within hours’, etc. Anyone with an ounce of sense knows this is nonsense, though somehow Charles (very delusional and narcissistic) seems to believe it, he must be very unwell. Anyway, so Charles says there is an anxiety switch in the brain and that his method switches it off and that you’ll then never be anxious again. Complete lie. Nonsense. I mean not only this dangerous rhetoric, but his websites are so amateurish, always full of CAPS and BOLD and exclamation marks!!! Forever banging on about ‘science’, he doesn’t know the meaning of the word.

Okay, so you have untruthful, dangerous rhetoric that pulls in vulnerable people. Bad enough. But then you get the bullying of ex-clients who write bad reviews. There is plenty of evidence out there. Then you also get him threatening others too (of police and legal action). There are prominent Clinical Psychologists and lay people connected with the anxiety community that Charles relentlessly tries to bully and threaten, a number of whom have had police visits and cheap looking, laughable solicitors letters (to note it was always ‘no case to answer’ in any complaint’). This is Charles’ modus operandi, anyone who questions him, he tries to silence. Some are understandably frightened and go away. Others who refuse to be bullied, stand up to him and will continue to expose him, won’t go away. And why should they? They are doing this to protect the vulnerable public and people have a basic human right to express their thoughts. Charles of course starts ranting about how people are defaming him, how can it be defamatory if true? The guy is weird. He just rambles. Charles Linden and his pseudo science Linden Method will be found out (well most have already figured this out through his amateurish websites, lack of knowledge, and constant aggressive ranting) and any amount of ranting and cheap solicitors letters will not stop this.

He has tried to bring misery on to good people, but his efforts will not work, they haven’t. It is pathetic.

For further reading, Professor Paul Salkovskis has written many comprehensive and interesting blogs on The Linden Method, for example:

Stay safe people and see your GP about a therapy referral if feeling distressed, they’ll be able to refer you to qualified therapists, which is free, rather than checking out a method, whose claims are being investigated by Trading Standards.
